FAMILY LAW

Family law is a hallmark service at GDO Law. We have decades of combined experience handling a variety of matters for families throughout the Twin Cities.

  • Divorce or Separation: We represent clients in contested and uncontested divorces, as well as those seeking legal separation.

  • Property Division: Dividing marital assets and debts equitably is not always straightforward, especially for clients involved in high asset divorces. We work closely with our clients to properly value all marital assets to ensure the property division is as equitable as possible considering the circumstances of the case. When needed, we partner with experts to provide business valuations, real estate appraisals, and pension and retirement valuations.

  • Spousal Maintenance (Alimony): The law is always changing in this area as societal norms evolve concerning the ability of both parents to work outside of the home.  We advocate aggressively for our clients in spousal maintenance cases, and will employ vocational evaluation experts if appropriate.

  • Child Custody and Parenting Time (Visitation): We work to create unique parenting plans and parenting time arrangements that truly are in the best interests of the child. We handle these issues during divorces, legal separations and in paternity cases.

  • Child Support: We are very familiar with the state’s child support guidelines and issues relating to the potential income of non-working and self-employed spouses.

  • Post-Decree Modification or Enforcement Actions: We represent parties seeking to change child custody, support, or spousal maintenance orders when significant changes in circumstances occur, such as in instances of unemployment or parental relocation.

  • Prenuptial/Postnuptial Agreements: We use prenuptial agreements to protect our clients and their children. We are available to draft agreements or review agreements for procedural and substantive fairness to both parties.

  • Orders for Protection/Harassment Restraining Orders: We seek to obtain these orders on behalf of victims of domestic abuse or harassment, and also defend against orders that are sought or have been obtained without a proper basis in law.

  • Adoption: We assist individuals and couples seeking to grow their families through adoption. This includes relative adoptions and step-parent adoptions.

  • Paternity: We pursue paternity suits when a parent wants to receive child support or to exercise rights to custody and visitation. We are available to represent either party in these cases.

  • Termination of Parental Rights: A court may seek to terminate parental rights to allow an adoption to move forward or in a situation of alleged parental abuse or neglect. We have the knowledge and experience to represent parents faced with these proceedings.

We Are Advocates for Our Clients

Although we strive to settle family law matters amicably, we will vigorously advocate on behalf of our clients at all stages of the process. We understand it’s easy to get lost in the emotions of any family law situation and work to guide our clients towards finding a solution that meets both immediate and future needs. We will be clear about costs and options, so our clients can make the most informed decisions about how to proceed.
